Amid ongoing scrutiny over Chinese-manufactured port cranes suspected of serving as espionage conduits, South Korea’s Meteorological Agency made a startling discovery when it identified malicious code in meteorological equipment imported from China. Recent reports from multiple South Korean news sources confirm that the malicious code was found in June this year. This revelation was initially disclosed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) during a media-invited cybersecurity forum held in July. In collaboration with other relevant organizations, the NIS also announced a joint, extensive investigation into Chinese-manufactured devices, including Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems. According to an investigative piece by IT Chosun, a subsidiary of the Chosun Ilbo, “Chinese cyber-attackers targeted a private firm in April that provides labor services to South Korean governmental bodies, attempting to infiltrate its internal network. The former head of a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) department responsible for engaging with foreign political parties met with multiple federal cabinet ministers and the national security adviser to the prime minister during a 2018 visit to Canada. This CCP department was recently designated an “intelligence service” by a German federal intelligence agency. The International Department of the Central Committee of the CCP, also known as the International Liaison Department (ILD), operates “de facto as an intelligence service of the People’s Republic of China and is therefore part of the Chinese intelligence apparatus,” says a “Safety Notice for Politics and Administration” in German....

U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said on Sept. 1 that the alliance between Russia and China worried him. “We have never seen a threat this large scale to Europe and the Pacific, I would argue, since World War II,” he told The Associated Press. As Japan releases treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean, misinformation has flooded Chinese social media platforms. Among the rumors was the supposed death of Yasuhiro Sonoda, a former Japanese official, who allegedly consumed treated nuclear water and succumbed to cancer. But a very alive Mr. Sonoda recently refuted these allegations in an exclusive interview with Japan’s Kyodo News. In a 2011 press conference, Mr. Sonoda, who then served as an administrative officer in Japan’s Cabinet Office, consumed treated water from the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
